Understanding Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is often confused with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although the condition lacks the hyperactivity element. ADD is a neurological problem that affects behavior which results in the sufferer being unable to concentrate or focus on schoolwork, productivity at work or even completing the most basic of tasks. ADD is mostly associated with young children, but it is increasingly being diagnosed in adults who have never previously received treatment.

Problems Often Associated With ADD

Children and young people of student age with ADD often have learning disabilities which can sometimes result in a poor disciplinary record. In many cases children express their difficulties in bad behavior, particularly if they do not understand the way they are feeling. It is not uncommon for adults and peers of children with ADD to consider them to be lazy and disruptive when in fact they conceal a deeper problem.

Although there are similarities with ADHD, ADD doesn’t always include hyperactive behavior and it manifests very differently. For example, a child with ADHD is generally at their most disruptive when in a focused environment like the classroom. Children with ADD, on the other hand, don’t struggle as much with focus and concentration and are less likely to be disruptive in class.

People with ADD often appear to be disinterested in what is happening around them, with a tendency to daydream. Whereas children with ADHD will react to being bored by becoming physically disruptive, a child with ADD is more likely to withdraw into themselves. They are likely to become forgetful about assignments and sloppy with their work, although with effective treatment they can learn how to cope with their condition.
